Boulder Canyon's First Summer With The Canyon Grille: What Actually Changed

Boulder Canyon's First Summer With The Canyon Grille: What Actually Changed

Drive Highway 14A between Sturgis and Deadwood and it's easy to assume anything new built along that stretch exists for the people passing through. Six miles one way to a town that fills with rally traffic every August. Seven miles the other to a historic gaming community built on out-of-towners. A restaurant that opens in the middle of that corridor looks, on paper, like it was built for tourists.

Look at when The Canyon Grille actually turns the music on, and a different picture shows up. Not Friday. Not Saturday. Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons, the two windows of the week that belong almost entirely to people who already live here.

What Opened, And When

The Canyon Grille held soft openings on April 29 and 30, then opened to the public on May 1, 2026, next to Boulder Canyon Golf Club. It's owned by Marlon and Camille McMakin, and the opening was announced by the Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau. The restaurant sits alongside the golf club's 11th fairway, with a covered patio and a 15,000-square-foot lawn built for dining and live entertainment, backed by the tree line of the Black Hills National Forest.

The menu runs steaks, chops, seafood, and Texas-style barbecue smoked in-house daily and served until it sells out, alongside craft cocktails and ingredients sourced from farms and ranches around the Black Hills and western South Dakota. Reservations run through Resy. A new, expanded Golf Shop opened at the same time next door, with a grab-and-go counter called The Bunker for food and drinks before a round or at the turn.

Here's what's new on the ground, all in the same season:

  • A full-service restaurant where the golf club's food service used to be a snack window
  • A 15,000-square-foot lawn for outdoor dining and live music, not previously part of the property
  • An expanded Golf Shop with its own grab-and-go counter, The Bunker
  • A live music calendar that ran weekly from May through summer

Marlon McMakin described the goal behind the build in plain terms: "we wanted to create a space that feels approachable, authentic, and connected to this incredible setting."

The Schedule Tells You Who It's For

Sturgis in August belongs to the rally. Deadwood's economy runs on weekend gaming traffic, Friday and Saturday nights when the casinos fill. Any new venue sitting between the two could have chased either crowd by scheduling around them.

The Canyon Grille didn't. Live music ran every Thursday and Sunday afternoon through the summer, a schedule that sidestepped both the rally crush and the weekend casino rush next door. Thursday is a workweek night for people who live along this corridor and want somewhere close to go without driving into either town. Sunday afternoon is the same idea in daylight, a slow end to the weekend rather than a loud start to one.

That's not the booking pattern of a business chasing pass-through traffic. It's the pattern of a business that assumed its regulars would be the same people who already drive 14A five days a week, and built the calendar around their week instead of a tourist's weekend.

The Golf Shop Quietly Changed Too

Boulder Canyon Golf Club is calling 2026 its 75th season, and most of the attention this year has gone to the restaurant next door. The bigger shift for anyone who actually plays the course or lives near it might be smaller: the golf shop got rebuilt from the ground up, and it now includes The Bunker, a stop for food and drinks before you tee off or mid-round at the turn.

For a course that has been operating along this stretch of 14A for decades, on-site food used to mean whatever the old clubhouse counter could put together. That's now two separate, purpose-built spaces instead of one small counter doing double duty. It's a small operational detail, but it's the kind of change that shows up in daily use long after the opening headlines fade. Anyone who golfs here on a Tuesday afternoon in October will notice it well after the summer concert crowd has moved on.

A Highway 14A Morning, Reimagined

Boulder Canyon sits at the head of the canyon it's named for, carved by Bear Butte Creek, which drains northeast toward the plains. The highway through it connects Sturgis six miles northeast and Deadwood seven miles west, which is exactly why most people who don't live here only ever see it through a windshield doing 55.

For the people who do live here, that same six-and-seven-mile math now includes a coffee stop worth knowing about. Caverna Coffee and Bistro in nearby Whitewood, run by Luke and Cheyenne Larson, has become part of the regular rotation for morning espresso and breakfast for people in this corridor, alongside diner options in Sturgis. None of that required The Canyon Grille to open. But taken together with a new restaurant lawn, a rebuilt golf shop, and a live music calendar built around a local week rather than a tourist weekend, it adds up to more reasons to stay on this side of the canyon instead of driving into town for a meal or a Thursday night out.

That's the actual shift this season. Not that Boulder Canyon got a destination restaurant aimed at Sturgis and Deadwood traffic. It's that the calendar, the counter setup, and the build all point the same direction: toward the people who were already here before opening day, and who'll still be here long after this year's rally crowds and casino weekends have come and gone.
